So, here's my kitten story...
I was working in the shop one Sunday in March. A customer walked around the back of the candle display and said "oh, isn't that cute!" then, "oh my god, it's alive!"
I thought it was one of the resident lizards, but when I asked her she said no, it's a kitten! What?!?
I walked over there and there's this tiny little black kitten, about 4 weeks old, scared to death. Now, I'm thinking someone ditched her there and I am furious. I snatch her up and send Michelle right away to get bottles, milk, food. She won't take the bottle, she won't eat. I leave her in a box in the storage room to settle down. Several hours later, toward the end of the day, Michelle is pulling out the herb boxes (thank goodness) and exclaims "there's another one!"
Now I realize that the kittens were born on top of the shop (neighbors had spotted pregnant Mommy)and they must have been playing, in and out of our maze of construction, and fell into the shop. I had no plans to have kittens, but when they fall from the sky, it kind of seems like a sign, you know?
The last time I had kittens was 3 years ago. A whole litter of seven plus the Mom arrived just before Yule and adopted my house. I, of course, took them in from the cold, got them healthy and found them homes - all but two kittens and Mom. Momma disappeared shortly after that and the runt of the litter (Little Bit) only lived for 5 months, sickly the entire time and living most of her life in the crook of my arm against my heart. Let's just say we bonded. After obscene amounts of money trying to 'save' her (my husband-at-the-time's choice, thinking it was the right thing to do by me but in hindsight, it was an obvious mistake), her little body finally gave up and I had to end her suffering. I was having some tough times in my life at that time too, so it was pretty devastating for me. I was convinced that she would come back to me someday, in another kitten, so I watched for her. I knew I would know her. I met a LOT of kittens in those three years - people coming into the shop to give them away, friends, work situations, etc. None of them seemed anything like her personality.
So, my little falling stars come along and I'm thinking... maybe? At first, I actually thought not and was going to find them a home. But then, I was holding Jinx and she looked me right in the eye, put out her little paw and put it on my lips, exactly like Little Bit used to do. There are about 30 other 'little things' that have convinced me that she made it back, so here we are, family. Little Bit's sister, Grasshopper, is very, very disgusted with me for bringing home new babies, but I continue to hope that she will forgive me eventually. Jinx's sister, Cricket has become the light of my life too - she's my first black cat! She's actually black/brown tortoise shell calico, but mostly black.
So, here is a picture of them at about 5/6 weeks and the larger picture is at about 10 weeks.
I do have to say that I thought I was going to have to get rid of them, in spite of my emotional attachment, because finances are way beyond bad right now. Luckily, someone recommended checking with the Cat Protection Society in Eustis. They helped me out so that I can keep them and get them the shots and spaying that they need. So, please, support the Cat Protection Society in any way that you can - adopt a cat, donate money, volunteer, spread the word!!! They are very good people!
And PLEASE spay and neuter any cats that you acquire!!! There are so many cats and kittens that need homes and are being euthanized. It is just irresponsible to have a cat that is still reproducing. Thanks for letting me lecture :)
